Has it only been a year? It seems much longer.
As I looked out my office window and watched the flames erupt from the towers, I remember thinking: "The world will never be the same again." But strangely, it is. Six months after the attacks, life in New York felt normal again. The rhythms of the city resumed their fevered, syncopated pace. The pile of rubble near the tip of the island was just another challenge to overcome, another great public works project to engineer. New York has always been good at those tasks.
Of course, it's an illusion. The world has changed. We just don't understand how yet.
