Movement on the spectrum front
New York Times: "Technology companies and the Pentagon have reached an agreement to unlock a swath of spectrum for the next generation of wireless devices, officials said today."
This is good news for three reasons. It means more spectrum for unlicensed wireless devices in the 5 GHz bands. It means that spectrum will be better harmonized internationally, reducing costs and expanding markets for vendors. And it means that US Defense Department doesn't always trump commercial interests when its "national security" arguments are overblown.
UPDATE: The downside of the agreement is that it requires commercial devices to avoid military services, potentially changing the technical requirements for the existing U-NII band where 802.11a operates.
